This morning I had my 26 week appointment with my midwife. And I actually had questions for the first time. Everything went well. She said that Baby M is growing right on track, and his heart beat sounded great! Praise God. Also this morning, I had my gestational diabetes screening. You have to drink this really sugary orange drink then have your blood checked an hour later. The first sip of the orange stuff was ok... but getting it all down within five minutes was not easy. Yuck. They'll let me know if the results came back abnormal.
We are going to get registered for our childbirth class soon. We are not doing a series of classes at the hospital, but using a childbirth educator and doula recommended by my midwife. I'll also probably take a breast feeding class at the hospital depending on how much the childbirth class covers. I also found out today, that we will be able to donate the baby's cord blood. Banking it would be nice, but we're going to go ahead and donate it to the international registry. I wasn't certain whether or not this would be an option for us, but it is. We trust will use it for something great and to His glory.
I asked my midwife about a pediatrician recommendation. I told her that our struggle would be in finding one who would be ok with using an alternative vaccination schedule. She thought the pediatrician that I am currently considering would probably be one most open to using an alternative schedule. That was good to hear.
Another thing I had a question about was delaying the cord being clamped by about 1-3 minutes or so. I was very happy to hear my midwife say, "Oh don't worry... we're in no hurry to camp the cord. It also stops the nurses from taking our baby!" Hearing that keeping the baby attached to the cord and close to the mom at birth was standard procedure with my midwife (and that the nurses already know this is the way her birth's go) was music to my ears.
The only thing that did not go quite as well is with my weight gain. Now remember, my total weight gain so far has been five pounds. Well... my weight gain over the past four and a half weeks was 8 lbs. Eek. That was a bit of a bummer! However, I'm not going to get too bent out of shape about it. For one thing... my eating habits have not changed and I have been walking at the mall 20-30, 3-4 day (my PT doesn't want me walking more than 30 minutes.) And I was expecting a bigger weight gain because my belly has just felt heavier (the baby now should weigh just under two pounds.) The normal weight gain at this point is between 16-22 lbs... so with my total at 13 lbs., we're not too concerned at this point. I'm going to try to be a bit more careful to make sure I don't end up with another 8 lb weight gain. And on a side note, a friend of mine had a similar situation where her weight gain was nice and low, then one month she had a random 7 lb weight gain. Baby could have also had a bit of a growth spurt. Regardless, I'm not going to stress about it, just do what I can to make sure it doesn't happen again.
And my friend, Kim, in BG welcomed her little boy into the world yesterday! She had some complications during pregnancy and had been on bed rest in a hospital in N'ville for quite a few weeks now. They had to delivery early (planned), but her precious little boy was born perfectly healthy yesterday, and they are both doing well. This was a huge answered prayer for her family! Welcome to the world baby Aiden!!

Kelly I am going to PRAY that you do not have to do the 3 hour glucose test---the drink is the same size-- but double the amount of sugar--and it has to go down in 3 minutes---
ReplyDeleteIf this should have to happen-- Plug your nose and chug-- (i asked for mine to be room temp because its easier for me to chug a room temp drink)
AND if you should have to do the 3 hour-- dont worry-- about 75% of people who have to do the 3 hour end up passing it-- that one hour isnt the best and most accurate test they can do!
